In the midst of a stressful birthday week I escaped to Sense of Touch Day Spa at Tseung Kwan O for a blissful couples treatment
A week after getting out of a crazy 21-day quarantine that found me at Ramada Grand View, Penny’s Bay, North Lantau Hospital, and back to the quarantine hotel, I celebrated my birthday as a free person. After all the stress of an unexpectedly protracted quarantine, plus the chaos of getting back to work and catching up with real life, all I wanted to do was sequester myself in a peaceful retreat and get pampered.
Which brought me to Sense of Touch Tseung Kwan O. I had previously visited the spa’s Repulse Bay and Central locations, but not yet its branch at in Sai Kung District, southeastern New Territories. The difference between the brand’s Lan Kwai Fong and Southside spas was so different – one an urban centre, the other very much a garden oasis – that I was curious to see what this one was like.
I was not disappointed.
We took an Uber from HK Island and arrived at Sense of Touch TKO some 15 minutes behind schedule. Unfortunately this cut into our 2-hour treatment, which was a shame as I would definitely have enjoyed 15 minutes more of a soak in the beautiful bath!
The spa is located within the premises of Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East. We were given an option of tea or water at the reception, and then were ushered through a green relaxing outdoor area to the treatment room. The spacious Thai-inspired getaway features individual spa pods located within a tree-lined walled garden. It’s definitely an escape from the busy city downstairs.
We found out that the treatments at Sense of Touch TKO were created in partnership with Italian skincare brand Comfort Zone, which has just launched Sacred Nature: a new, sustainable, organic and vegan product line that is also carbon-negative and devoted to protecting the planet.
I originally wanted to book the “Two Tropical Bliss” (HK$3,650for two persons/2.5hrs), but during the time of booking in September 2021, it was not available as the government still had a ban on steamers. The Two Tropical Bliss is a tropical-inspired couple’s treatment that begins with a dip in a milk and oat bath to balance the skin. We missed out on the steam bath of a wild crafted Indonesian recipe of ginger, spices and lavender, ending with a soothing aromatherapy massage.
Instead we were offered the “Bath, Scrub And Massage” at HK$1,850 per person for 2 hours. They said it was the closest they had to the couple’s treatment so we went for it although on hindsight it’s slightly more expensive and 30 minutes shorter than the Two Tropical Bliss. Definitely go for that one if you have the chance!
The bath and scrub was divine, followed by a soothing massage. A couple of points they can improve on were (1) placing a bowl of water and flowers under the head of the massage bed for visual and olfactory effect, and (2) they had a booking shortly after us so we didn’t feel like we could properly take our time. Granted, it was on us as we were 15 minutes late, but it was a bit of a brusque process making sure we cleared the room.
I already expressed this feedback to the team and they graciously took it well, so hopefully these points will be improved on next time.
Would I recommend it? Yes! Honestly it’s a gem in Hong Kong in terms of the location, that feeling of spaciousness and tranquility. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but for special occasions like a birthday, anniversary or gift, why not? They have pretty good seasonal promotions and packages as well that can soften the blow on your wallet.
