Wine & Dine Festival + Wine HK Contest

Let’s talk about wine, wine, and… food in Hong Kong – especially with all the wine-related and gastronomic events happening within these two months.

This post comes in three parts:

The Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival 4-Day Opening Party 2014

Every year the Tourism Board organizes this Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, which is a month-long affair presenting various events and special offers around the city dedicated to gastronomy.

Last year it was held at the Central Harbourfront with a really fantastic vibe, and I went for 2 days out of 4 (the opening party):

However, this year they relocated it to the Former Kai Tak Runway in Kowloon East because of the protests in Admiralty.


Unfortunately we took visitors to the event thinking it would be good, only to ruin the first part of our afternoon in the hot hot heat and general horror that was this year’s Wine & Dine Festival.

What was wrong with it?

  1. The ATMOSPHERE. No grassy seating/picnic areas where people can relax and have a good time – forcing everyone to stand in the HEAT with no reprieve.
  2. The PEOPLE. It seemed like a mainland tourist trap in which everyone was just hopping from one booth to another trying as much as they could without appreciating wine, really. It was like some sort of twisted shopping excursion in Canton Road, except instead of designer goods, people were hustling for wine.
  3. The PEOPLE at the booths also had a distasteful attitude about them. You think that wine industry people will be cultured and polite but they weren’t.
  4. The LOCATION. There was no view, no breeze. You couldn’t get in or out unless you took a taxi or got shuffled like sheep to and from the free shuttle buses. Nightmare.

The list goes on but you get the point.

Yes there were lots of people so maybe the organizers will call the event a success but DID ANYONE ENJOY IT? I would be surprised if the answer was yes.

Wine HK from December 6-7, 2014

Just when I thought the WINE & DINE hullaballoo would be over by November, here comes another event on its tail end. And it seems to promise a better, classier experience than the one I just attended.

Returning for the second year running, “Wine HK features some 800 wines against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s iconic skyline” at the Central Harbourfront from December 6-7 2014.

That’s more I like it!

12,000 wine enthusiasts are expected to attend (not like the brainless drones who didn’t seem to know or understand what they were doing at the Kai Tak Wine & Dine Festival…)

What else will be there?

  • Wine tastings
  • Informational wine sessions
  • Riedel People’s Choice Awards
  • Wine booths featuring medals on the most popular wines, for easy identifying
  • The Wine HK Tasting Championship (you can win a trip to a chateau in Bordeaux!)

This fun competition will get competitors to blind taste different wines. Entrants will participate in a variety of lively challenges, leading up to the knock out wine tasting for 60 people on Friday (5 December) and then 10 finalists for the last tasting challenge on Sunday (7 December).

The winner will walk away with their own body weight in wine and a trip to Bordeaux, France for 2 – including a 2 night stay at Chateau Du Tetre aside from tastings at other chateaus, all usually by invitation only.
